How success breeds success

چکیده
We investigate if, and why, an initial success can trigger a string of successes. Using random variations in real?effort laboratory experiment, we cleanly identify the causal effect early competition. confirm that indeed leads to increased chances later success. By alternatively eliminating strategic features competition, turn on off possible mechanisms driving Standard models dynamic contest predict due asymmetric incentives between winners losers. Surprisingly, find no evidence they explain positive winning. Instead, winning seems driven by information revelation effect, whereby players update their beliefs about relative strength after experiencing

Field experiments of success-breeds-success dynamics.
Seemingly similar individuals often experience drastically different success trajectories, with some repeatedly failing and others consistently succeeding. One explanation is preexisting variability along unobserved fitness dimensions that is revealed gradually through differential achievement. Alternatively, positive feedback operating on arbitrary initial advantages may increasingly set apart...
متن کاملSuccess Breeds Success Locally: a Tale of Incubator Firms
This paper focuses on the pre-establishment period of start-ups in industrial districts. The industrial architecture is what I call a "rationed agglomeration" in which some entrepreneurs gather around an established rm while other entrepreneurs in the same business stand alone. In a rationed agglomeration, I analyze the e¤ects of relations between established rms, network entrepreneurs, and l...
متن کاملSuccess breeds success in mating male reed frogs (Hyperolius marmoratus).
Studies of the distribution of mating success among males in frog choruses typically seek to identify specific phenotypic attributes that confer a higher mating success on certain individual males. These attributes invariably relate to competition among males: either direct competition in the form of aggression, or competition to attract and be chosen by females. In this paper, we present evide...
متن کاملSuccess Breeds Success: Evidence from In Vivo Experiments
Successes tend to accrue to people who have been successful before. Two mechanisms can explain the relationship between past and present success. Pre-existing differentiation along fitness dimensions may repeatedly direct successes toward certain subpopulations. Alternatively, success may breed success through positive feedback. Observational studies have not been able to evidence the operation...
